Human resources courses every small business owner should take

If you own or operate a small business, there’s a good chance you don’t have money in the budget to hire a human resources specialist. Sure, we’d all love to have someone to take care of recruiting, payroll, benefits and employee morale. Unfortunately, that’s just not reasonable for many entrepreneurs. Instead, many end up taking on the role themselves (which can be quite difficult for someone with no HR training).

Fortunately, there are many courses out there aimed at teaching HR essentials to small business owners. It’s never a bad idea to increase your knowledge - the most successful entrepreneurs are constantly learning, and for many, this means taking several courses a year. Remember, the more expertise you have, the better your business will perform.

Essential HR Courses

Many colleges and universities offer human resources courses for small business owners. Not all of these courses are valuable, but many are. Here are some of the most useful courses to look for:

  • Human Resource Strategy. If you’re new to owning a business, you should get yourself some training in recruiting and managing your employees. You’ll also want to learn as much as you can about compensation and labor standards.
  • Leadership. The best bosses are great leaders. Look for a class that teaches a variety of leadership styles, motivation, delegation and decision-making, with a focus on small business.
  • Professionalism. It’s important that you act professionally when you are around your employees (and require they do the same for you). Look for a course that covers topics like ethics, stress management, public image and social responsibility.

Online Courses

A recent trend in post-secondary education shows more people gravitating toward online courses. This is especially evident in courses aimed at working professionals. If you’re interested in taking a class but don’t know whether it’s a good idea to do so online, we say go for it! Online courses are just as valuable as in-class courses, provided you still devote the same amount of energy toward them.
